The day was September 2nd and venue was Galle face hotel Main ball room, everyone knew it was going to be a stunning night with flash lights. The show started at 9 P.M. no one ever knew how the new faces were going to be like; at the same time there were a lot of well -known faces on the Stage.

This is the First Concert of 3EdgedCircle crew, all three bands [Fatal Identity, Floating Gravity & Function-1] played on one stage. They have been performing individually but the crew never got the chance to perform together.

More flavors were added to the concert with the performances of CENTIGRADZ. It was never hard to work with them for 3EC coz they knew each other very well in the music Industry, followed by UltraV ft Dank, Arcadians, Censored, S. Kelum, K.Sujeewa and Mahinda Kumar.

The concert just began; Function-1 started the Flow with their Hardcore Rapping Star Ajith, Damian and Harsha. They started with well- known "NYLON GIRL" followed by "MOST GIRLS" & "FREE STYLE LODGE".

Then Floating Gravity was on stage with their debut single TRADITIONAL CRUSH featuring Dank of Fatal Identity. Digital music composition (DMC) of Kelum. This single was the start of the 3EC crew. Even though the guys were performing separately in previous concerts Traditional Crush recordings and practices strengthened these three bands.

Then performances of the next 3EC band was Fatal Identity [FID], lead by Dank (Danushke) the composer, Lyricist and the main vocalist, Mel (Malinda) the Rapper & the vocalist, Max (Graham) & Roshan. They started performing with their Debut Single "Sithuwilla" which was done in 2000, composed by Dank and with the new Digital Music touch of Nadeesha and Manula of FID, followed by "Ae Eda" the new R&B hit of FID. Punjabi RockS

Sri Lankan artistes with raw talent, a little Punjabi sound fused with Sinhalese and some management help are finding a ready springboard into India's music world.

Household names in Sri Lanka, 'Bhathiya & Santhush' and 'Iraj Weeraratne', have made it on Universal Music India's newest album 'Number One Hits on the Continent', alongside other Indian stars.

For local artistes it is a break into a royalty goldmine and possible stardom. Already, tracks by both artistes are doing the rounds on Indian television and music charts.

"We put out videos of both of these artistes on Indian television channels. The rotation is generally a week or two and then its consumers that decide how much it gets played," Managing Director of Universal Music India, Rajat Kakar said in Colombo on Tuesday

Ashanthi's Debut Album

Ashanthi de Alwis is to release her debut solo album in the next couple of months. With a tour schedule and workload that allows for very little wriggle-room, the diva's long-awaited album has been a steep learning curve and a labour of love.

The album is a fresh perspective on life and love" says the sultry soul singer. "I want the album to be like someone's favourite t-shirt - an album that you feel at home with, a soundtrack to life of sorts."

Production-wise Ashanthi says the album is a fusion of the newest sounds - a blend of ethnic melodies and radio-friendly hip hop/rnb. With production powerhouses such as Bathiya Jayakody and the Renganathan brothers [Shri and Sarangan] behind the mixing desk, future prospects for the album certainly look promising.

Ashanthi's intentions for her album are hardly fame-driven. At the moment, she is the first and only Sri Lankan female artist signed to an interntational record label. She feels this achievement is testament to the potential of female musicians in Sri Lanka. "I want the album to be an inspiration to other artists such as myself. There is so much untapped talent out there".

Much Luv 2 Ruki D

WHATS HOT IN LANKAN MUSIC

Krishan is no stranger to the music industry. He started off his rap career at the raw age of 15 when he formed Urban Sound together with brother Gajan Maheson.

They created originally produced hip-hop songs which were frequently played on English Radio stations in Sri Lanka. Together with his brother, he  later went on to create a documentary music video called “Stop the Virus” on AIDS awareness for YATV. This was produced by veteran musician Dulip Gabadamudalige, which won "Best TV Campaign" at the Asian Institute of Broadcasting Development awards.

Once brother Gajan took a break from music Krishan
teamed up with Iraj on “ROOTS” as a lyricist, rap artiste
and co-producer. After the hit song the duo hit the nation
with something that touched everyone’s soft corner with
the “J-Town Story”-(A song about a young Tamil boy from
the North and how the war affects his life). This was an
instant success among all language speaking
communities in Sri Lanka.

features sounds of Asian hip-hop and R&B using all
languages English, Tamil and Sinhala. The album features a variety of music as it is produced by different leading music producers in the country, each adding their own style and specialisation. The featured producers are Ranga
Dassanayake from the very popular HIT FACTORY,
Iraj Weeraratne, Yohan Rajapakse, Rukshan Mark
Lokuge (Charles Mark) and Nisal Gangodage.

Only Hiphop

Only HipHop - Cilent Project

Smokani and Red Rum sounds like exciting ingredients for an exhilerating cocktail. But to bring you down to earth they are the stage names for two young singers who have formed themselves into a hip-hop group and call themselves the Cilent Project.

The main force of the duo is twenty one-year-old Kanishta who chose to hop on the music train because he considers it is his life. "I'm not looking for a 9-5 job" he states adamantly. One wonders! However the lure of the stage and spotlights could hardly be resisted and together with his duo partner and friend Lasitha (Red Rum) they decided to hit the road to stardom, from the hill capital Kandy.

Four years ago Cilent Project came into being. Besides the duo, Smokani co-opts other singers for rapping, sometimes as he tells us, he uses ten others for a rap harmony section.

"We perform pure hip-hop, there's no r & b. I've been listening to rap intently from when I was twelve years old. My parents used to scream but I couldn't resist the influences and styles of Pastor Troy, Sticky Fingers and Royceda 59.

I write the lyrics and the music and our first performance was for a Talent Search contest called Mystic Waves held at Hillwood College, Kandy. We sang a cover of Snoop Doggy called Street and we won, but we got a certificate. Then in 2003 we entered for another Talent Search contest held at St. Bridget's Convent, Colombo organised by the Interact Clubs of Royal and St. Bridget's. At this contest we sang Why Me a song by Fat Joe Cuban Link. After that we decided to give up going for talent contests. We found it useless" straight talks Smokani.

Which is why we saw Cilent Project branch out to perform in Colombo at open shows.

After their performances in Reach Out 2 in Colombo, Reach Out 3 in Kandy and Reach Out 4 in Kurunegala, their stage confidence strengthened and they have now thrown themselves into making tracks for their first album of twelve songs. "The songs are full hard core hip-hop and we are being assisted by Diliup Gabadamudalige in making the tracks, in fact he is our manager" Smokani proudly expresses.

In baggy pants and big T Shirts Cilent Project hope to shout out

New Album from 6th Lane

Our music has no limitations", says Hiran Thenuwara, leader of the groovy 6th Lane. "In fact we sing R & B, Hip-Hop, rock, pop and fusion" continues the young and enthusiastic Hiran who is responsible for writing all the songs that they perform.

At the moment there is a lull in their performance dates, since Hiran is at the University at Peradeniya in the throes of attending lectures and working tutorials towards becoming a dental surgeon. However, they did perform at Reach Out 2 in Colombo and Reach Out 3 in Kandy. Last week 6th Lane were featured in a live performance on Sirasa. In their own way this four piece band is putting together music tracks for their new album, in the weekends, and which they will launch with a concert soon.

This new album of theirs will have eight tracks and will be produced by Hiran. The themes are love and reality but different from Nirvanaya', with the rhythms in hip-hop, r & B rock and fusion, and laced with a large serving of rap.

The groups debut album Nirvanaya containing fourteen originals was released on the M. Entertainment label. The director of the album, Hiran is happy that he titled the CD Nirvanaya because according to him "the music was a new approach intended to give a sense of heaven to a true lover of original and imaginative music." The CD found success because it came out at a time when the focus was on youth music talent and creativity and was well received by the young who were waiting for something different to hit their way and Nirvanaya fitted the bill.

Most of the songs were written by Hiran and Ramya Thenuwara, with his band member Chamath Janaka chipping in along with Karunadasa Suriarachchi.

Dedicated and committed in their music 6th Lane is determined to hit the high spots. When they started off they took on the name of 'Uth Max' quite appropriately and were successful in having their song Vassanaya telecast on Swarnavahini's prime time programme Heart Beat.

Another of their songs Mal Peththak was telecast on Sirasa TV. Their song Blue Soul turned out to be a hit track and was aired on Sun FM Hot 40. Other songs that became popular for them were Conflagration and Sacrifice on a lie which stayed on TNL radio's Sri Lankan Top 10 for many weeks. 'Blue Soul' will soon be made into a video, so watch out for 6th Lane's appearance on the popular TV stations.
